Outdoor activities are the best ways of staying healthy and at the same time it provides you with fun filled entertainment. You can engage yourself in a variety of outdoor activities like hiking, fishing, cycling, horseback riding, white water rafting, kayaking, skiing, mountaineering and rock climbing.

A lot of people taking part in outdoor activities do so to stay healthy since it provides a very good way of exercising. Apart from the health point of view, people engage in outdoor activities since they relish the feeling of accomplishment after participating in one. Outdoor activities provide the best way to escape the monotony of everyday routine life. It helps to strengthen relationship between family members and office colleagues. They are also considered as a means of socializing.

Outdoor activities are essential to lead a balanced life. By reducing stress and tension, strengthening family bonds, and bringing a sense of accomplishment, outdoor activities help to improve the overall health of a person. Swimming is an outdoor that most of the people practiced. Some of the other popular outdoor activities include walking strongly, gardening, jogging, cycling and hiking, camping in a tent, boating, golf, and other paddle sports like canoeing, rafting and kayaking.

Outdoor activities should be started when the age is young. Thus the parents have an influential role in it. Certain factors like scarcity of time, general disinterest, lack of knowledge, high club fees and concerns about safety can stop a parent from allowing a child to participate in outdoor activities. To solve this problem, you can jut take a little walk or a bike ride.

Bringing in enthusiasm in the minds of the people for outdoor activities can be a problem. Purposefully turning off the television set, and start participating in small walks can help you start with outdoor activities. Joining an organization or organizing different activities among friends and family members also helps.

If you are a Nature lover, then camping is a great way to get close to Nature. The National Parks are best for such an outdoor activity. It is always best to do a little bit of research on the type of outdoor activity you selected. Know the weather condition, the food and kit you should carry with yourself. You can explore the National parks by cycling, fishing, rock climbing, horseback riding, and hiking. Engaging in outdoor activities has no substitute of staying healthy and enjoying and exploring Nature at the same time.

Hiking is one of Pacific Northwest outdoor enthusiasts favorite activities. Oregon and SW Washington offer an incredible variety of forests, parks and national monuments ready for exploration and appreciation. Hikers should not be taken by surprise in this incredible area of the country however. Forest, coastal lands and cave hiking all present unique challenges to any hiker. The Pacific Northwest can prove to be dangerous if hikers are unprepared.

Forest Trail Hiking

The Northwest’s forest trails are ideal hiking destinations because the scenery and beauty are unmatched by any other location. These trails wind through lush pine and fir tree wooded areas, tranquil open meadows, and creek and river crossed landscapes. The native wildlife – beavers, foxes, deer, elk, songbirds, squirrels make it an ideal place for nature watchers. Oregon and Washington have very well maintained trailways and they take pride in their stewardship of the forests here. However, hikers should still be prepared for the unexpected in these areas.

The most important item to pack on any hiking trip, especially in the summer months, is water. Food is a close second. Emergency lights and signals are also essential for any recreational hiker. Traditional roadside flares or signal lights are not an option in the Northwest wilderness as likelihood of starting an unintentional fire is very high. A LED emergency light is small, lightweight, affordable, and offers powerful, high-quality light that can be used as a distress signal as well as a flashlight.

A multi-purpose pocket knife is also essential to safe hiking in the Northwest. These tools often include miniature scissors and pliers, tweezers and a compass which can all be useful to a hiker. The basic knife blade in these tools can be helpful to scratch trees and branches in order to mark an unfamiliar trail should you get lost. Consider packing mosquito repellent and sun block when hiking these forest trails as well.

Coastal Hiking

The Pacific Northwest is known for its unpredictable and sometimes treacherous coastal weather. Hikers are advised to dress for the elements when hiking along coast range trails. A rain jacket and sturdy, waterproof boots are essential. The Oregon or SW Washington coast is are often overtaken by dense, heavy fog coverage. These fogs can come in without warning, stranding and disorientating hikers who are unprepared. It is important to bring a powerful LED flashlight or lantern when hiking this area to illuminate the trail or campsite as well as alert help should you need it.

Cave Hiking

Cave hiking is one of the more dangerous forms of recreational hiking. This activity requires specific safety equipment and long-term planning. Along with multiple light sources, appropriate clothing and plenty of food and water, one must also make sure to bring protective head gear, rope, and climbing gloves. Experts recommend headlamps when cave hiking to allow for hands-free hiking. If considering cave hiking in the Northwest, contact a professional in the area who can provide specific equipment needs and precautions.

Hiking the Pacific Northwest trails is an incredible outdoor experience. A summer can be spent enjoying several trails, all with their own unique landscapes and beauties. Whether hiking through the Umpqua or Deschutes National Forests or exploring the Coasts Oregon Sand Dunes, hikers will not be disappointed so long as they come prepared.

If you’re planning on sending your kids to a summer camp during this following months you will be very happy to learn that there are Northeast summer camps that have the option of allowing your kid to experience magnificent landscapes and activities in which he will be very comfortable and he will also be having lots of fun. In Northeast summer camps you will notice that there are much more possibilities of performing activities and that the programs are much more extensive than in other places.

The reason why Northeast summer camps are so popular is because they have access to the most beautiful landscapes in the whole country, in there you will find many different lakes and mountains that help to enhance the activities which can take place during the summer. It is in North east summercamps that your son is able to experience most of the popular activities which have made summer camps so appealing in the last years. Your kid will be able to swim in a lake, or practice kayak or snorkeling while also being able to participate in competitions that will require the use of large masses of water.

Besides of all the practical uses that the Northeast summer camps landscapes can bring there is also the fact that your kid will be extremely happy of being able to appreciate the wonderful magnificence that the landscape has to provide, this is a relaxing opportunity for your kid to forget about his pressures at school or in his house and just go to North east summer camps to enjoy himself and the company of others. It is very well known that large friendships have started in Northeast summer camps; there are even many Northeast summer camps which are sponsored and managed by former campers from the area.

Your kid will have no problems acquiring new friends in Northeast summer camps; this is mainly because of the beautiful places that he will be attending and of the fact that the managers place activities on the kids forcing them to know each other and to trust each other which eventually leads to a long term friendship. After he returns from his summer camp he will be asking you to send him next year, because north east summer camps are something worth of being remembered and experienced as many times as possible.

So if you’re considering on sending your kids to a summer camp please have in mind the Northeast summer camps; in there he will be able to participate in many activities and also he will be having the time of his life, he will always remember moments of his childhood and we can guarantee that North east summer camps will be among them.

Many nights in the backcountry are far from dark. A bright moon and a sky full of stars can throw off enough light to allow for reading a book, but add cloud cover, mountains or trees and it gets dark awfully fast. When you need to see in the dark, you have two choices – you either turn on a light, or use one of the many available night vision devices (NVD). The NVD could be the ultimate backcountry toy.

Like choosing many other types of technology, choosing the correct NVD is all about how you are going to use it. When most people think of night vision capabilities, they think about spy movies, the military or law enforcement – applications where it is vital for the good guys to see without being seen by the bad guys. A drop in pricing over the past few years has made a NVD affordable for campers, hunters, hikers and a wide variety of other outdoor enthusiasts. However, high-end devices used for specialized purposes remain quite expensive.

There are two broad categories of NVD. Image Enhancement devices collect small amounts of light and amplify them to the point where the human eye can observe the object. Thermal Imaging devices capture the high end of the infrared light spectrum which is emitted as heat by objects. Image Enhancement devices will provide a much crisper image with detail while Thermal Imaging devices show regions of heat. Currently, five Generations of NVD exist. Generations 0 and 1 are less expensive and typically produce a poor image quality. Generations 2, 3 and 4 have increasingly better image quality and an equally increasing price to match.

Applications for NVD are actually quite diverse. They include but are not limited to: military, law enforcement, hunting, wildlife observation, surveillance, security, navigation, hidden-object detection, spelunking and entertainment. NVD can be found on helicopters, rifles, camcorders, cameras, boats.just about anywhere. A new craze found at up-scale gatherings is called A Dinner in the Dark Party where guests wear an NVD throughout their dining experience.

Many outdoor enthusiasts are beginning to discover the wonderful world that can be found after darkness falls in the backcountry. If you like to camp, hike or hunt, chances are good an NVD will be perfect for you.

Use this information and youll Get It Right The First Time. Get Outdoors!

The national park system in the United States is full of beauty and surprises. Still, youll be wondering if theyre worth it when you run into the crowds of other visitors.

Road Side Viewing

Sure, millions of people visit our national parks each year, miles of cars creep through at a painfully slow pace, parking lots are full and busses are packed. Cars stop in the middle of the road to view wildlife, backing up traffic for miles.

Is it all worth it? Should I just get stuck in a Los Angeles traffic jam with DVD player showing some nice mountain scenery?!

I travel through the Rocky Mountain Nation Park, using Trail Ridge Road, on a regular basis throughout the summer to reach some of my favorite fly fishing spots on the other side of the divide. I also have hiked many of the park trails. Let me tell you, I have seen the frustration of the gridlock national park experience.

Do you think the national park experience is looking out the window of your car or bus? How about stopping at the most popular scenic spots that are located within a stones throwing distance from the parking lots? If you do, well, you likely have missed out on 95 percent of the park and a serine magical experience that only those willing to put on the hiking boots get to see.

The system of roads in a National Park is designed to minimize the impact on the park. It is not designed to get you to the best places. If you do not get off your butt and hike a bit, you are not seeing the beauty of the park. Sure, you may have to deal with the cattle drive to reach your desired trailhead, but a leisurely stroll of about 1 mile leave the hordes of arm chair park goers long behind. You could be standing shoulder to shoulder with hundreds of people looking across Bear Lake at one moment, and in near solitude one hour later if youre willing to exert just a bit more energy than the majority of the park visitors.

Thanks goodness for the fast food armchair lifestyle!!!! Get on those boots and leave the crowds behind. Its worth it.

Memories can be made in a cost effective manner. Maximizing the fun and minimize the money spent is possible if you know some ways to reduce costs. The most effective way of having a memorable camping vacation is to create a budget and follow these tips and tricks for camping efficiently. The key is to have some key pieces of equipment that can be used in a variety of ways and that will last a long-time. This will allow you to enjoy the benefits of the equipment without worrying about the long-term effects of the cost.
It is frustrating trying to put together a quality set of camping supplies on a limited amount of money but it is very possible. First off, develop a list of equipment priorities. The camp site location and the fuel to get there is a primary necessity. Food and water to last for the length of your stay would come next. Other important tools to include in your camping equipment list are a long-lasting flashlight or lantern, multi-purpose knife, extra batteries, a first-aid kit and matches to build a campfire. Camping supplies such as tents, sleeping bags, and chairs will make camping comfortable and will keep you warm and dry. The secondary list of camping items would include hobby tools and equipment like those for boating, cycling, or fishing.

Camp Site Location and Getting There
Campground prices usually weigh in a $12 to $25 per night. Call the campground ahead of time to determine prices at your local state or national parks. Also, consider whether the campground you are going to has running water, bathroom and shower facilities, charcoal grills and trash disposal areas. Depending on whether the grounds have these you may need to add or take away items from your camping list. Additionally, estimate gas money ahead of time to ensure you are prepared.

Food and Water
Include in your camping list the coolers, water jugs, paper or plastic plates, and cups you may need while camping. Investing in reusable camping dishes is a benefit for families that camp often and saves on the environment as well. Purchase enough food to last the course of your camping vacation and be smart about buying non-perishable foods wherever possible. About $200 should be allotted for food and gas. This should cover your needs for about a 2-3 day trip, depending on how many people you are feeding and how far you plan to travel.

Camping Tools and Equipment
There are several items that are camping essentials. A multi-purpose tool or knife is essential for safe and effective camping. A multi-purpose survival knife will come in handy for cutting string or twine to hold down tents or hang tarps during rainy weather. It can also be used for opening canned food, gutting fish, and fixing other camping equipment should it break. There are a number of brands and styles of survival knives available. Find a good, quality one and keep it with your camping equipment at all times.
Quality lights are also important camping equipment. The most cost effective light for camping is a LED flashlight or LED lantern. They last longer than the usual fluorescent or incandescent bulb and are more resistant to breaking. This is very important if you are camping deep in the forest where it will get darker quicker or if you will be hiking to your destination. Having a long-lasting, dependable LED lantern or flashlight will give families extra reassurance of safety. LED lighting products are sometimes more expensive than regular camping lights but their longevity and bright light make them a smart investment.

Altogether, it is estimated that the cost of camping will be approximately $300-$400, making camping and spending time in nature a relatively inexpensive alternative vacation. Planning out your camping vacation: a quality, well-stocked campsite, food and water, tents and sleeping bags, survival knife, and long-lasting flashlights will help you spend a budget wisely and even save money in the long-term. This means more memories that last a lifetime.

Mr. Bittlekirk is, for the most part, your average, agreeable guy. He likes football, baseball and fast food. His physically demanding job keeps him in good shape as his handshake and physique implied. Rugged face and stature, Mr. Bittlekirk was outwardly personable but I detected a serious edge about him too. Over coffee and a sweet-roll we talked about our upcoming session.

I like to gather information about my student before guns are loaded and targets fly. I inquired about goals, priorities, targets shot per month and problem areas, all to better understand who Mr. Bittlekirk was and where we were going.

His questions were insightful and showed forethought coming into his lesson. Hed studied under a good teacher who, he felt, had taken him as far as he could. He was here to learn, understood there was no magic involved and that progress would come only after some work and possibly change. We were off to a good start.

A strong intermediate shooter, Mr. Bittlekirk was straightforward in his approach to shooting. There were a few surprises for Mr. Bittlekirk along the way and thats what gave me the idea to write this piece. Id like to share with you some of the dialogue, questions and answers as we moved forward and through his time with me. As with most men, it isnt just about shooting methods. It always goes a little deeper than that and I dont mean that to be derogatory. Its just that our gender brings certain ideas and beliefs to the table. Which brings us to his first comment as he took his gun out of the slip.

Dan, I really dont like to miss.

Whys that?

Because I get frustrated easily after a miss and everything seems to go down hill from there.

I didnt wince when I heard it but knew that I would be devoting some of our time to sorting this out.

It didnt take long for a teaching opportunity to present itself. The target didnt look all that difficult and actually wasnt. But it had a trick in it he didnt spot right away and the target curled away, under his shotstring every time. Four times to be exact. Before answering his question about where he was missing, I asked him to take a few seconds to consider why. Wed already discussed the solution on the previous field. Discouraged, he shrugged his shoulders. I again suggested the small adjustment to the upcoming shot. Closed to suggestions and bent on the unpleasantness I knew was coming, he wasnt listening. After all, he was frustrated.

The targets not that hard Dan. I know I can break it!

Mr. Bittlekirk was visibly determined. Arms and forehead knotted up, three more shots went astray.

I called a time out and asked politely, What is our objective here?

Looking at me like I was an alien he said, To break the target. Now Im used to that answer and waited for the right moment.

The objective here is to use good form. Tired from struggling, he thought about that and nodded. Once more, I suggested the small adjustment in his swing. X. X. X. All was well in his world again. But I also knew this was only until next time, which would likely be soon. So, to reinforce our objective I shared with him that breaking targets is very seductive. Its completely natural and downright logical to believe that because we did break the target, what were doing must be right. This isnt always the case as evidenced by our misses, caused by the inconsistencies in our game. Until we can expose and account for those inconsistencies were doomed to repeat them. Thats where performance plateaus come from. I reminded him that this wasnt a criticism, just a truth we eventually have to confront if were serious about improvement.

Sporting clays continues to be an elegant sport born of long tradition, fulfilling our wingshooting passion to experience the wing and shot. Feather and clay, inescapably tied, grants us so many learning opportunities to hone our skills, a path of personal growth that affords us a refreshing, unbiased look at ourselves. Time and again, my students have learned how entirely more capable they are than once thought. The American sporting clays shooter can honestly and proudly say, in a very short period, he has indeed advanced to take his rightful place among the best in the world. And, lets not forget, no one is having more fun out here than you and I are.

The events, times, places and persons in my articles are all true. While I changed a name here and there, 100% of the information came from my experiences with you. Each tournament, each lesson, each experience with you generated the material for my work. I am grateful.

Many hikers who are bored of the normal marked trails, and discovered wilderness areas have come to a new adrenaline rush: mountain hiking. Hiking several hundred feet above sea level gives those with a taste for the extreme the rush they are looking for. If you are that kind of hiker, then mountain hiking is for you.

But wait, before you start day dreaming about the top of the summit, you first need to know how to get there. Mountain hiking isn’t much different than simple hiking. The only major difference is the endurance needed and the terrain you are hiking on. Over all the same gear is needed and the idea is much the same.

The three layer system that is often used in hiking also applies in mountain hiking. Let’s do this real quick: the layering system offers three different layers of clothing that a hiker should follow.

First is the base layer, which is responsible for keeping a dry and comfortable microclimate next to your skin. For mountain hiking, you can wear two pairs of long johns, top and bottom. The clothes should be made from synthetic fiber but not from cotton.

The second layer you need in mountain hiking is the insulation layer. This layer provides more warmth if the base layer and the shell layer do not provide enough insulation on their own. And last is the shell layer, providing you protection from wind, rain, sleet, snow, etc.

Shirts for mountain hiking during good weather
Wool or fleece sweater or synthetic insulated jacket
Wool shirt or sweater, second fleece/pile jacket, vest, etc.
Fleece pants – side zips are nice as they come in handy if you are getting too hot

While in a typical hiking trip, no more than three layers of clothing is needed, this is not so in mountain hiking, where the conditions can be harsher and more extreme. That is why a fourth layer of clothing is usually added, the ‘super’ insulation layer.

You might need to wear eye protection, depending on where you are hiking. In snowy conditions, blindness is common due to the glare, even on overcast days blindness can be a concern. Also in sunny conditions it is important to wear eye protection to protect your eyes.

Mountain climbing is a great way to escape the rat race and be one with nature. Alas, your mountain climbing experiences can fade with time. The best way to prevent this is to keep a mountain climbing journal for your adventures.

Mountain Climbing Journals

Take a minute to give some consideration to your most recent mountain climbing experience. What sticks out in your mind? Now think about the first time you ever went mountain climbing. Undoubtedly, you remember few things about the geography, people you went with, particular mountain climbing routes and spectacular views. The experiences youve forgotten are lost to time. If you keep a mountain climbing journal, this wont be the case.

There are famous instances of people keeping journals throughout time. Of course, Anne Franks Diary is the best example. In her diary, Anne kept a running commentary of the two years her family spent hiding from the Nazis. While your mountain climbing experiences better be more lighthearted, keeping a journal will let you remember them as the years pass.

A good mountain climbing journal combines a number of characteristics. First, it should be compact so you dont have to take up unnecessary space for other things. Second, it should have a case to protect it from rain, spills and so on. Third, the journal should contain blank areas to write your notes. Fourth, the journal should contain cue spaces to remind you to keep notes on specific things. Cues should include:

1. Who you went mountain climbing with,

2. Where you camped and if you enjoyed it,

3. Who you met and contact information for them,

4. The geographic and weather conditions, and

5. Any unique things that occurred while mountain climbing.

6. The routes you took up the mountain and alternatives.

7. Any inside information provided by experienced locals.

At the end of the mountain climbing trip, you should be able to get the following from your journal:

1. Contact information for other climbers you met,

2. Enough detail to provide you or a friend with a guide if you climb the location a second time.

3. Memories to reflect upon years later, and

4. Something to pass on to your friends, children and grandchildren.

To get the most out of your mountain climbing journal, you should write in it just before you climb, as you summit and when you return. Doing so will give you an accurate picture of your thoughts throughout the climb.

Mountain climbing is a great way to commune with nature. Make sure to preserve the experience.
